THANKS so much for the links and the tips on this page. The screenshots and install steps are slightly different for our Windows7 Pro machines but close enough! It helped to let the usb connection fail a couple times (unplug/replug cable) while the Device Manager window stays open, in order for the handheld device to show up on the list (see it as "Palm" under Other Devices). For the Clie SJ22, this Windows 64-bit driver worked with the Sony Palm desktop manager on the original product CD, version 4.1. For the Tungsten E2, I have Palm Desktop 4.1.4 running/syncing on Windows 7 Pro. Thanks again for keeping this site up for the rest of us!
